FAQs about RC servos
What is an RC servo?
An RC servo is a compact actuator used in radio control vehicles including helicopters, cars, drones and RC boats. Servos are typically comprised of a gearbox and small motor, a potentiometer for measuring the output gear’s position
How does an RC servo work?
An RC servo converts electronic commands from the RC receiver into physical actions. These actions are what move the various components of your RC vehicle.
Servos use a simple circuit to interpret a control signal frequency and potentiometer output to accurately position the output spline. RC servos contain a small motor which is controlled by circuitry. Torque from the small motor is multiplied through gearing.
The size of the servo doesn’t change its operation, from nano to large scale RC servos, the gearing principles and signal protocol work in the same way.
Which is better, an analogue or digital RC servo?
Digital servos, use a control board with an increased refresh rate, giving them a faster response time to improve the overall performance of the unit.
Modern digital servos are often deigned to handle higher voltages then older analogue servos. This means the motors with respond faster with increased power and accuracy.
Servos from brands such as Power HD can be programmed with advanced features such as acceleration and speed.
Which servo is right for my RC vehicle?
Some factors to consider when choosing your RC servo:
Size: The correct sized servo for your RC vehicle will depend on the model. For instance, most 1/10 and ⅛ scale RC vehicles are made to fit a standard size servo which measures around 20mm x 38mm x 40mm. Check your RC vehicle’s manual to find the correct size or get in touch with our RC experts for assistance.
Torque: The larger and heavier your radio control vehicle is, the higher amount of torque you’ll need from your servo. As a general guide, a 1/10 scale short course or stadium truck or buggy will need around 12kg-15kg of torque and a heavier RC 4WD vehicle or ⅛ and larger scale RC vehicles will need 20kg or more of torque to perform correctly.
Speed: The speed of your RC servo should be 0.15s or less regardless of type or size.

Should I use a brushed or brushless servo?
Brushed servos are typically much cheaper than brushless servos, making them a popular choice for beginners. Advanced RC hobbyists tend to favour brushless servos as they provide more speed and are more efficient.
