The Tiger II, also unofficially known as the King Tiger, developed in 1943, was mass-produced by Henschel from 1944 onwards. The King Tiger outstandingly combined the demands for armor protection and firepower. The front armor, which was up to 150 mm thick, could not be penetrated by any projectiles from the on-board guns of enemy battle tanks. The hull sides were armored up to 80 mm thick. Despite several massive bombing raids by the Allies on the Henschel factory in Kassel, a total of 492 Tiger IIs were delivered to the troops - including the prototypes and 50 vehicles equipped with Porsche turrets. However, not all of these reached the front units. A large number of the Tiger IIs were lost due to drive problems resulting from the high overall weight or simply due to a lack of fuel.
