The M113 is an American armored personnel carrier. The first designs were developed in 1956, and mass production at FMC began in 1960. Production continued until 1987, producing 73,000 vehicles for the U.S. Army and for export. The M113 entered service in 45 countries, including Israel, Spain, Italy, Greece, and Germany. The M113 is the most popular armored personnel carrier in the world and forms the basis for the world's largest family of armored vehicles. The M113's hull is constructed of steel and aluminum, with welded armor. This reduces weight but protects the crew only from small-caliber ammunition.
