$49.99

Description

The Heavy Cruiser USS Pittsburgh CA-72 is a veteran of the heroic assaults on Iwo Jima and Okinawa.. and one of the most remarkable feats of navigation in Naval History! Even with her bow torn away in a South Pacific typhoon, the dauntless cruiser managed to reach home port without a man lost! (Admiral Halsey called the separated bow, which was later towed to Guam for salvaging, "a suburb of Pittsburg"!) She is fondly referred to by all Navy men as "the longest ship in the world", with literally thousands of miles between her bow and stern. Although the USS Pittsburgh was sold for scrap in 1974, an anchor is on display in front of the Children's Museum, in Pittsburgh, PA. and the ship's bell is in front of Pittsburgh's Soldiers and Sailor's Memorial Hall and Museum.
