Description

HMS Royal Oak was one of five Revenge-class battleships built for the British Royal Navy during World War I. Her construction began on January 15, 1914, she was launched on November 17 of the same year, and completed on May 1, 1916. She entered service the same year and participated in the Battle of Jutland.

HMS Royal Oak captured the world's attention in 1928 when her senior officers were subjected to a controversial court-martial, an event that caused considerable embarrassment to the Royal Navy. Throughout her 25-year service, despite numerous modernizations, her slow speed remained unresolved, and by the start of World War II, she was no longer fit for frontline duty.

On October 14, 1939, HMS Royal Oak was temporarily anchored in Scapa Flow, Orkney, Scotland, serving as a floating gun platform, when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine U-47.
