The Fulmar was Britain's inaugural purpose-built carrier fighter, introduced in 1940 to succeed the Fairey Swordfish biplane. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Merlin III 12-cylinder engine, it achieved 247mph maximum speed with a 700-mile operational range. Armament consisted of eight 0.303-inch machine guns and capacity for a single 250lb bomb. The aircraft saw widespread deployment throughout the early Second World War across Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Far Eastern theaters. Despite its pioneering role, the Fulmar proved underpowered and lacked agility compared to contemporary German and Japanese fighters, leading to its gradual replacement by the Hawker Sea Hurricane and Supermarine Seafire.
