The prototype first flew December 23, 1941, with serial production commencing January 1942 and continuing through 1945, yielding over 10,000 aircraft. The airframe mounted two Pratt-Whitney R-1830-92 engines rated at 1200 hp each. Multiple variants were produced, with the A-version (reinforced cabin, 24V electrical system) and B-version (upgraded powerplants) seeing the largest production runs. The C-47 operated across all World War II theaters in transport, casualty evacuation, airborne, and glider-towing roles. Aircraft were supplied to the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease provisions, with the USSR manufacturing over 6,000 additional examples as the Li-2 from 1939-1952.
