Twin steam turbines powered the outer shafts while a central MAN diesel engine drove the middle shaft, enabling the vessel to achieve 33.5 knots while meeting extended range requirements. Conceived as a high-speed Atlantic commerce raider, construction was scheduled to begin simultaneously at Kiel and Wilhelm shipyards in 1939, but the program was canceled by year's end.
