The ACH-47A variant accommodates eight crew members and features an extensive armament suite: up to five M2 12.7mm or M60D 7.62mm machine guns positioned at side windows and tail door, two fixed M24A1 20mm cannons mounted on short wings, and optional external attachments including M18/18A1 cannon pods or 19-tube rocket pods. A 40mm automatic grenade launcher is mounted at the nose, with additional secondary armament systems. Enhanced armor protection was integrated around the cockpit and critical systems for increased survivability. During the Vietnam War, three ACH-47 Chinooks were deployed for six-month operational evaluations, designated "Ill-gotten Gains," "Stump Jumper," and "Birth Control." A fourth prototype, "The Price of Life," remained in the United States for testing. All three operational aircraft were lost despite successful mission performance during the evaluation period.
