The aircraft entered RAF service in December 1943 with the 354th Fighter Wing of the 9th Army Air Force in England, while additional aircraft deployed to the 12th and 15th Army Air Forces in Italy. Before the P-51D became operational, the P-51B served as a primary fighter variant on the European theater and accounted for one-third of all P-51 family combat sorties throughout the war. Production variants continued with some units through war's end.
