The Grumman F9F Panther was the manufacturer's first jet fighter and the US Navy's second. It first flew in 1947. Power was a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet built under license by Pratt & Whitney as the J42. Since there was insufficient space within the wings and fuselage for fuel for the thirsty jet, permanently mounted wingtip fuel tanks were added. F9F-2B: version fitted with underwing racks for bombs and rockets. All F9F-2's were eventually so modified, and the B designation was dropped. Description Kit consists of 124 parts on 4 sprues, and the completed kit measures 9 1/2" long with a wingspan of 9 1/2". Developed post-WWII, the Panther became a mainstay of US Navy and Marine forces in Korea. They were the first carrier jets to fly in combat, shooting down two YAK-9s on their first mission in July 1950. Later, in November, it became the first carrier jet to shoot down a Soviet MiG-15. The F9F-2 remained in service into the late 1950's when subsequent variants of the Panther were put into use. View All Close
