Players begin with 16 vegetable cards forming the soup base. On each turn, a chef may alter one card's attribute by swapping it with another, shift an entire row or column of vegetables one space left or right, or pass if all preferences are satisfied. Each player maintains secret taste preferences that must be met alongside shared team objectives. After each modification, players silently indicate satisfaction or dissatisfaction using taste cards, revealing emotions without disclosing their specific ingredient preferences—"That's terrible!" is permitted, but "I despise mushrooms!" is not.
