Sergeant Cuthbert leaned back, enjoying the thermal picture on his Challenger’s monitor. His tank was positioned in a tank scrape on a low ridge overlooking the expected avenue of the enemy advance. “Attention all stations this is Zero, India Two Zero reports enemy armour to his front, over”, the Troop Leader acknowledged. “Here we go boys, Action, Load Fin! Driver!” “Roger” came the reply. Cuthbert scanned the front, immediately finding a hot spot, a Soviet tank! “Fin Tank” Cuthbert laid the muzzle of the 120mm onto the centre of the tank “On!” The gunner replied “On, lasing.” The main gun automatically laid onto the target. “Loaded,” yelled the loader. Cuthbert grinned and yelled “FIRE”. “Firing now,” shouted the gunner, the tank rocked with rapid movement in the turret as the gun recoiled, the breech opened and the loader commenced loading another of the three piece projectiles. The sweet smell of burnt cordite filled the turret. A bright flash was seen through the imager, ‘Get in there” shouted the gunner as the Soviet tank’s turret spun through the air. ‘Target Stop” instructed Sergeant Cuthbert. So much for the new Soviet reactive armour! The APFSDS Fin projectile was brutal. The Royal Hussars Troop was in hulldown prepared positions. They had exercised in this area a couple of months ago and knew it well. “Load HESH Smithy, I can see BMPs.” Let’s be having you, thought Sergeant Cuthbert.
