TAMIYA 1/48 MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F-4B PHANTOM II The F-4 Phantom II, which began deployment in the early 1960s and produced more than 5,000 aircraft.

As a versatile aircraft boasting a long cruising range and excellent loading capacity, it is said to be the most successful jet fighter because it has been operated not only by the US Navy and Air Force but also around the world.

In 1952, the US Navy presented aircraft manufacturers with design requirements for supersonic fighters.

In this development competition, McDanell gave up on Vought's F-8 Crusader, but continued development thereafter.

Create a double-seat fleet air defense fighter with all-weather performance and two powerful engines.

This fighter, which does not have an autocannon and is equipped with four air-to-air missiles, AIM-7 Sparrow and AIM-9 Sidewinder, as standard equipment, was officially designated as F4H-1 (later renamed F-4A) in December 1958.

Production of the first full-scale mass-produced F-4B began in 1961, and deployment to the VF-74 (74th Combat Squadron) began in July of the same year.

In the Vietnam War that broke out on the Indochina Peninsula, the F-4B was introduced as a new aircraft about half a year after entering the United States.

As early as 1965, the North Vietnamese Air Force's MiG-17 was shot down for the first time, but most of the US Navy's shots down in the first half of the war were due to the F-8 Crusader.

However, since Operation Linebacker in 1972, the skill of the crew has improved and the number of engagements with enemy aircraft has also increased.
