Background information

As a milestone in German engineering, the Leopard 1 made military history in 1965. Its development marked Germany's re-entry into international tank production. The perfect balance of mobility, firepower and protection made it an export hit - more than 4,700 units were produced and exported to 13 countries. The various user states developed their own variants, which differed in specific adaptations and equipment. It formed the backbone of the German armored force until 2003, before it was replaced by the Leopard 2.
