The prototype belonged to a 16-car class constructed between 1937–1952 at Newport works, entering service in 1939. Originally built for the broad gauge Spirit of Progress as first-class accommodation, three examples were later converted to ABS configuration with buffet facilities during the mid-1950s. The carriage remained in broad gauge service providing air-conditioned accommodation on long-distance routes until the early 1980s, when surviving examples received BS recoding. Finished in blue and gold livery.
