By 1984, this variant received the T-72B designation, with a simplified version termed T-72B1 that lacked gun-launched missile capability. The distinguishing features included a redesigned turret (informally called "Dolly Parton" by Western forces) and Kontact-1 ERA blocks applied to both hull and turret surfaces. Soviet production from 1985 through 1989 yielded 3,435 units. The T-72B1 has maintained extended service within Russian armored forces prior to replacement by later T-72B3 and T-90 models.
