The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the best aircraft made during the Second World War. Produced in more than 20,000 examples, starting from 1941, it was, together with the Messerschmitt Bf 109, the most famous fighter of the Luftwaffe. In the first versions, such as the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 A-8, the fighter was equipped with a BMW 801 D-2 double star radial engine with 14 cylinders of 1,700 HP which allowed it to reach a maximum speed of 653 km/h. Over time the designers, from the successful aerodynamic cell of the aircraft, created what can be considered its maximum evolution. The adoption of the powerful 12-cylinder liquid-cooled Junkers Jumo 213 engine forced a revision of the aircraft's design, characterizing it with an elongated nose. The D version was in fact nicknamed "Langnasen-Dora" (Long-nosed Dora) by Luftwaffe pilots but, once in flight, they immediately appreciated its characteristics and potential. The FW-190D was in fact able to compete on equal terms with the most modern Allied fighters such as the famous P-51D Mustang.
