The production of Italian tanks during the Second World War was concentrated on the “M” version. The M-13/40 was the most famous and widespread tank of the Royal Army. Equipped with a 47 mm gun, it was characterized by the original structure of the tracks and suspensions and by the protection achieved with the characteristic “ribbing”. The M-40 self-propelled gun was also built on its hull. Armed with a 75 mm howitzer installed in the casemate, it was decidedly feared by enemy armored vehicles. The best results were obtained by the combined use of the M-13/40 flanked by self-propelled guns that were able to compensate for the limited firepower of the tank. During the war, both tanks and self-propelled guns were improved in terms of technical solutions and armament.
