The “Char de Bataille” B1 was the main tank used by the French Army during the Second World War. The original project was set up in the mid-1920s (many technical solutions adopted such as the large open tracks are in fact typical of the period) but it began to be distributed to the departments only in the mid-1930s. Robust and massive, it was improved in its “bis” version in order to increase its performance and operational performance.

It was armed with a 47 mm turret gun and a 75 mm howitzer installed in a casemate in the front of the tank. Although it was overall a good tank for the period, the Char B1 bis was used as support for the Infantry Divisions and not in autonomous Armored Groups that would have guaranteed greater operational flexibility against the German Panzer Divisions during the French Campaign of 1940.
