Description

The M8A1 landing mat, commonly referred to as PSP (Pierced Steel Planking), was a crucial piece of American military engineering developed during World War II.

Designed for rapid deployment in combat zones, it allowed the U.S.

Army Air Forces and other branches to construct temporary runways, taxiways, roads, and hardstanding areas on uneven or muddy ground—especially in forward operating areas.

Each section of M8A1 matting was made from pressed steel, typically measuring around 10 feet long and 15 inches wide.

The panels featured regularly spaced holes to reduce weight, allow drainage, and provide traction. A hooked and slotted edge system enabled quick and secure interlocking between sections, allowing vast areas to be covered in a short amount of time by engineering teams.

The M8A1 saw widespread use throughout World War II, including in the North African, Pacific, and European theaters, and continued service into the Korean War.

Its durability and ease of assembly made it indispensable for operations in remote or undeveloped areas.

Even decades later, remnants of M8A1 mats can still be found in former airfield sites and are sometimes repurposed in civilian settings.
