Based on the civilian Skymaster design, the O-2A featured twin piston engines in a push-pull configuration—one mounted in the nose and one in the rear fuselage. This centerline thrust arrangement provided better handling characteristics than conventional twin-engine aircraft and enabled a high-wing design that offered superior visibility for reconnaissance missions below and behind the aircraft. The O-2A first flew in January 1967 and entered USAF service in March of that year. Production continued through 1970, with 532 aircraft built across two variants. During the Vietnam War, the O-2A served in forward air control missions and retained a night reconnaissance role even after the introduction of the OV-10 Bronco, due to the Bronco's bright cockpit lighting which compromised night operations. ---
