Upon completion, Hood ranked among the most formidable warships of its era, with a 41,200-ton displacement that made it the heaviest capital ship in service for two decades. In September 1940, Hood commenced patrol operations in northern waters near Iceland, monitoring potential breakouts by German heavy naval units. By May 1941, when Bismarck and Prince Eugen breached the blockade, Hood was redirected alongside the newly commissioned battleship Prince of Wales to intercept and neutralize the German vessels before they threatened British convoy routes. On 24 May 1941, combat commenced at 05:52 with opposing forces separated by 25,000 yards. As Hood and Prince of Wales maneuvered to close distance, Bismarck returned fire with remarkable accuracy. The German battleship's third salvo struck Hood near the main mast, igniting fires. At 05:55, the British ships pivoted broadside to bring all batteries to bear. Bismarck's fifth salvo delivered a catastrophic hit, resulting in a column of flame rising 1,000 feet.
