The US Army M-ATV (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected – All-Terrain Vehicle) All-Terrain Cargo Carrier was developed to meet the urgent operational need for a highly mobile, well-protected logistics vehicle capable of operating in the harsh and varied terrain encountered during modern counter-insurgency operations.

Introduced in the late 2000s, the M-ATV was designed and manufactured by Oshkosh Defense as a lighter, more agile alternative to earlier MRAP vehicles, which proved effective against roadside bombs but struggled in mountainous regions, poor road networks, and off-road environments.

The cargo carrier variant extends this concept by combining MRAP-level crew protection with a dedicated rear load-carrying platform, enabling it to transport supplies, ammunition, equipment, and mission-specific payloads closer to the frontline.

The vehicle features a V-shaped hull to deflect blast energy away from the crew compartment, significantly improving survivability against mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Advanced armor systems, including modular ballistic protection kits, allow the level of protection to be adapted to mission requirements.

Despite this heavy protection, the M-ATV retains excellent mobility thanks to its independent TAK-4 suspension system, high ground clearance, and powerful diesel engine, allowing it to traverse rough terrain, steep gradients, and unpaved routes with confidence.
