MGB Karlsruhe began production in 1928, continuing until 1943 when wartime versions were manufactured. With 776 units built, the BR 86 holds the record for longest production run among German locomotives. From 1939 onward, examples operated in Austria, Poland, and the Soviet Union. Czechoslovak State Railways subsequently operated 65 seized locomotives as reparations, retiring most during the 1960s.
