Initial flight occurred in November 1978 with production commencing April 12, 1980. The first 380 airframes were F/A-18As before production transitioned to F/A-18C variants in September 1987. Single-seat (A/C) and tandem-seat (B/D) configurations account for 1,480 total A-D variant aircraft. The type operates from both carriers and ground bases with in-flight refueling capability. RAAF airframe A21-29 was accepted in April 1988. During May 1990 deployment to Clark Air Base in the Philippines, a Top Hat and Cane insignia was applied to the tail identifying the aircraft as the Commanding Officer's personal mount. On August 2, 1990, A21-29 and A21-42 departed RAAF Tindal for training intercepts; during aggressive maneuvering A21-42 lost visual contact and collided with A21-29, which successfully returned to base. The diecast model features professional paint application, precise detailing, and pad-applied markings. ---
