Description

In the 1950s, the Lockheed L-1649 was considered the epitome of innovation and elegance. In 1957, the "Super Star" joined the Lufthansa fleet and was the first to offer the Senator Class, the most exclusive travel option. Its primary route was the nonstop transatlantic route to New York. With its four piston engines, it marked the end of the era of classic propeller aircraft. These flights, lasting up to 17 hours, originated in Hamburg, which was also home to the maintenance base. Therefore, the rollout of the restored D-ALAN took place on January 20, 2025, at a location of equal significance to both Lufthansa and Lufthansa Technik. There, it also received a new cabin, inspired by the style of the 1950s. The seats, for example, were sourced from a previous Lufthansa A340, meticulously refurbished, and upholstered in burgundy leather. The carpet and curtains are also based on historical patterns. After the rollout, it was once again disassembled into larger segments and transported by heavy haulage to Münster/Osnabrück Airport. There, it was repainted in the original Lufthansa livery from the so-called parabolic phase. Finally, in October, the Super Star arrived in Frankfurt. Just in time for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the first Lufthansa, it will form the main attraction of the Lufthansa Group's new conference and visitor center there from spring 2026, together with the legendary Junkers Ju 52 D-AQUI.
