Description

The HELLER model represents HMS Victory, commanded by English Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson. A first-rate three-decker ship, she participated in the Battle of Trafalgar and was the fifth Royal Navy vessel to bear that name. She was officially christened Victory on October 28, 1760. By 1777, with Britain at war, on May 8, 1778, she sailed as flagship under Admiral Lord Keppel for the first naval battle against the French fleet off Ushant (Ouessant). While in dry dock, Victory was re-armed, and by the time she was relaunched in April 1803, her appearance had changed considerably. Most of her gold decorations had been altered or removed.

By the time Victory sailed again, she had the appearance so admired today. In 1825, the ship became the command post of the Chief Admiral in Portsmouth and retained this honor until 1869, when it was restored 32 years later, in 1901. In 1921, the Nautical Research Society, under the chairmanship of Lord Milford Haven, organized a campaign to preserve the Victory, and on January 12, 1922, she was given a berth in the oldest dry dock in the world, Dock No. 2 in Portsmouth Harbour. The Victory can still be admired in this dock today in a remarkable state of preservation. Note: The instructions, which are also available separately, are included with the model kit and do not need to be purchased additionally.
