The Isuzu Bellett features an egg-shaped body made up of elliptical curves, four-wheel independent suspension, As a compact passenger car, it incorporates various innovations, such as the adoption of a sporty floor shift. It was introduced in 1963. In 1964, the first model in Japan to be called GT (Gran Turismo) was released. The two-door coupe "1600GT" was released.

The 1600GTR, which had its engine replaced with a 1,600cc DOHC from the 117 Coupe and had reinforced suspension on both the front and rear wheels, was released in 1969 as the top model of the 1600GT.
