At 72,800 tonnes full displacement, she and her sister ship Musashi represented the heaviest and most heavily armed battleships constructed, equipped with nine 46 cm (18.1 in) Type 94 main guns—the largest naval guns ever fitted to any warship. Laid down in 1937 and commissioned in late 1941, Yamato was conceived to counter America's larger battleship force. She functioned as Combined Fleet flagship throughout 1942, hosting Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto's command during the June 1942 Battle of Midway. After Musashi assumed the flagship role in early 1943, Yamato transited between the major naval bases at Truk and Kure. In December 1943, submarine attack inflicted torpedo damage requiring repair at Kure.
