Description

At the start of the war an Imperial German infantry division consisted of two infantry brigades of two regiments each, a cavalry brigade of two regiments, and an artillery brigade of two regiments.

In addition to the Guard Corps (two Guard divisions and a Guard cavalry division), there were 42 regular divisions in the Prussian Army, which included four Saxon divisions and two Württemberg divisions, and six divisions in the Bavarian Army.

At mobilisation these divisions were reorganised, with engineer companies and other support units transferred from their corps.

They also gave up most of their cavalry to form cavalry divisions.

Reserve divisions were also formed.

Landwehr brigades were collected into divisions, and other divisions were formed from replacement (Ersatz) units.

As the war progressed, additional divisions were formed and by 1918, 251 divisions had been formed.

Historically, German troops had always been more aggressive and flexible than their opponents.

This, added with the new Stoss tactics, had given the German soldier an edge in combat.

Quickly closing with the enemy means less time spent under enemy fire.

Though the Germans put extensive efforts into improving tactics and training, not every unit could be fully trained in the new Stoss tactics, especially among the divisions recently transferred from the Eastern Front to take part in the great Spring Offensives.
