In 2024, Holden, Bathurst 1000 and Australian motorsport fans will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of one of the most famous results at Mount Panorama featuring the ‘Last of the Big Bangers’, the #05 and #25 Holden VK Commodore Group C’s raced by Peter Brock / Larry Perkins and John Harvey / David Parsons to finish 1-2 in the 1984 James Hardie 1000.

Peter Brock’s ‘Big Banger’ is truly one of the most iconic race cars in Australian motorsport history.

Sporting fat group C flares, extra chunky dunlop tyres, and of course the monster birdbath spoiler on the rear, the Big Banger was always going to be a formidable racing weapon.

Combined with the striking livery it looked like a superstar, even though it’s racing life was relatively short.

Introduced at the 1984 Sandown Castrol 500, it raced only three times - winning every time - before being superseded by the incoming Group A rules. The Group C VK’s were unbeatable, but not from sheer luck, each car was tailored for racing from the very beginning.

Larry Perkins personally oversaw the assembly of the shells to ensure that the usual body deadening and seam sealing was omitted to allow the lightest shell that could be produced. Then the cars were fitted with hand built 308 cubic inch V8’s, pumping out a shade over 400hp. Coupled to the bullet proof Borg Warner Super T10 four speed gearbox, it had mumbo to match the mean looks.

As the old saying goes ‘proper planning and preparation prevents piss poor performance’, and HDT had done their homework. By the time they’d arrived at the mountain they’d clocked over 1000km in 05 and tweaked suspension, brakes and tried three types of tyre.

This was proven to perfection with a 1-2 finish at the James Hardie Bathurst 1000. It cemented Peter Brock as the true King of the Mountain, and both he and the VK have become immortalized in the lore surrounding Bathurst, and also in Bronze as the full-size sculpture of Brock and Big Banger has pride of place outside the National Motor Racing Museum in Bathurst itself. No other Australian race car has been so revered, replicated and referenced as the Big Banger.

Now, 40 years after Brock and Perkins crossed the finish line first, Authentic Collectables are excited to announce our 1:43 scale replica of this car.

It's scheduled to be produced in high quality sealed body die-cast with clear windows, detailed racing cockpit and more in an exclusive one-off limited edition, presented in a display case with the model attached to a white base plate which features the car details printed on it. An individually numbered backing board featuring the edition number is also included as part of the package and acts as the Certificate of Authenticity for the release.

*Please Note: Due to Australian tobacco advertising laws, the model will be produced without the complete livery applied.*
