The ship underwent motorization and conversion to luxury cruising and naval training roles during its operational history. By the late 1970s, the vessel had deteriorated significantly while abandoned in Venice until discovered by a dedicated enthusiast. With financial backing from a major French banking institution, restoration efforts transformed the Belem into a functional training platform offering maritime instruction and discovery courses. The vessel now serves the French Navy's training programs while maintaining participation in traditional sailing gatherings. The French government designated the Belem as a Historical Monument on February 27, 1984.
