Between 1971 and 1973, the VW 1302S and VW 1303S variants competed extensively, participating in major rallies including TAP, Austrian Alpine, Elba, and Acropolis with drivers Tony Fall, Guenter Janger, Harry Källström, Achim Warmbold, and Franz Wurz. The vehicles featured heavily modified 1600cc engines producing 125 hp (93 kW), later upgraded with a Porsche 914 five-speed manual transmission. Competition highlights include an Elba overall victory in 1973, Acropolis class placement, and consecutive Austrian championship titles in 1972-1973.
