History
The nickname 'Leatherneck' for the United States Marine Corps originates from the leather collar that was part of their uniform in the early 1800s. During World War Two, the Marines became famous for their island-hopping strategies in the Pacific, enduring some of the toughest battles of the war. From the shores of Guadalcanal to the volcanic terrain of Iwo Jima, the Marines excelled in amphibious assaults, using landing craft and inflatable boats to breach heavily defended areas.
Armed with an intimidating range of weaponry, Marine units included flamethrower teams to clear bunkers and fortified positions, while bazooka teams offered essential support against tanks and fortifications. The inflatable assault boat was crucial for reconnaissance and smaller amphibious operations.
While primarily known for their Pacific theatre actions, U.S. Marines also took part in the European theatre. Marine units were present on the Normandy beaches during the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944, playing a role in the largest amphibious invasion in military history. Their proficiency in beach assaults and integrated arms tactics, refined through extensive training and Pacific combat experience, was invaluable during the liberation of Europe.
The bravery and determination of the U.S. Marines during World War Two cemented their status as one of the most elite fighting forces in military history, with their amphibious warfare strategies continuing to influence modern military tactics.
