This resulted in 36 completed vehicles for domestic deployment, with select Guy Lizard variants later serving in North Africa under the 8th Army. As armoured regiment expansion accelerated, demand for additional command vehicles grew significantly. Associated Equipment Company (AEC)—renowned for manufacturing London's iconic double-decker buses—received a Ministry of War Transport contract in April 1940 to build Matador 4x4-based artillery tractors and command vehicles. Following full military conversion by 1941, AEC commenced production of the armoured commander vehicle. These vehicles featured 10-12 mm armour protection and weighed up to 12.2 tons, providing accommodation for 7-8 personnel. Manufacturers produced both High Power and Low Power variants, distinguished by their respective radio configurations.
