The AEC 4x4 ACV, constructed on an AEC Matador chassis, entered production in 1941 and saw approximately 415 units manufactured. Service commenced in North Africa and continued through war's end. Troops nicknamed the spacious, well-appointed vehicle the Dorchester after London's renowned hotel. German forces captured three examples; two—designated "Max" and "Moritz"—served Rommel's headquarters. A larger 6x6 variant followed in 1944, based on the AEC 0857 lorry chassis and powered by an AEC 198 engine producing 150 hp. The hull consisted of 9 mm welded rolled steel, bringing total weight to 17 tonnes. One hundred fifty-one units were constructed in two configurations designated LP (Low Power) and HP (High Power).
