The GP-9s only really differed from the GP-7 through its 16 cylinder, 567c prime mover. Its popularity, however, eclipsed its predecessor. Selling 4,112 units compared to the GP-7s 2,729, the GP-9 was a staple of American Railroads in the 50s and 60s. ..Many GP9s were rebuilt in the 1960s and 1970s. Some lasted into the 1990s on the railroads for which they were built. Many more were sold to shortlines and industries for use as local switchers. Some remain in operation today. The locomotive responsible for retiring so many steam locomotives has also watched the passing of many diesels.
