To meet the changing needs of the war and the need to have a heavy tank, characterized by a high level of protection and armed with a cannon capable of drilling any type of enemy armor, Ferdinand Porsche developed the VK 4501 (P) project . The wagon had numerous innovative solutions for the time but still not entirely reliable. During the testing tests, the Porsche prototype in fact highlighted the critical points in the driving system and in the propulsion that decreed the block of production on large volumes. In fact, the Wehrmacht preferred the Henschel prototype, the VK 4501 (H), which became the productive base of the famous and feared Tiger I.
