Description

On April 25, 1926, a young pilot and flight instructor named Charles Lindbergh joined the Missouri-based Robertson Aircraft Corporation to carry mail on a route between St. Louis and Chicago. This inaugural flight marked the humble beginning of what is now the world's largest airline, measured by the number of passengers carried and flights operated daily. After numerous mergers and acquisitions, the conglomerate of airlines was consolidated in 1930 under the name American Airways, before being renamed American Air Lines four years later. Fittingly, American has incorporated the historic "Flagship" livery into its current flagship aircraft, the Boeing 777-300ER. The iconic orange lightning bolt motif debuted nearly 90 years ago on the Douglas DC-3. All DC-3s were named after cities the airline served at the time, such as "Flagship Knoxville," which is on display at the C.R. Smith Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
