History

HMS Hood was the largest warship globally when she was launched in 1918, serving as a symbol of British naval strength and the pride of the Royal Navy. Her impressive size and graceful design earned her the nickname "the Mighty Hood" during her goodwill tours around the world.

In May 1941, Hood was tasked with intercepting the German battleship Bismarck as it attempted to break into the Atlantic. Alongside HMS Prince of Wales, she moved swiftly to engage the enemy. Upon encountering Bismarck, both British ships commenced firing in what would become one of the most dramatic naval battles of the Second World War.

Bismarck's return fire was devastatingly precise. Her fifth salvo delivered a fatal strike, likely igniting one of Hood's magazines, causing the ship to sink in a mere two minutes. Out of her 1,500 crew members, only three survived. The sinking of HMS Hood was a profound shock to Britain and the world, spurring the Royal Navy to pursue and ultimately sink the Bismarck just three days later.
