Originally designed as a transatlantic passenger liner and sister ship to the RMS Olympic and RMS Titanic, the Britannic incorporated enhanced safety features based on lessons learned from the Titanic disaster. Launched shortly before World War I, the vessel was requisitioned as a hospital ship and operated between the United Kingdom and the Dardanelles during 1915 and 1916. The Britannic achieved distinction as the world's largest hospital ship and largest vessel built in Britain at that time. On 21 November 1916, the ship struck a naval mine near the Greek island of Kea in the Aegean Sea and sank 55 minutes later.
