Description

This is an Academy 1/288 scale Snap-Tite kit. With mans first steps on the moon, the future of the Earth was changed forever. However the first rockets to be designed for space travel could only be used once. This was extremely costly and it would soon become impractical to continue space trips in such a wasteful manner. In 1972, NASA, Americas space agency, began development of a reusable spaceship, calling it a Space Shuttle. This rocket plane can be launched on the back of a huge 154 foot long tank, using two booster rockets and its own three engines to climb into space. The Shuttle itself is as large as a jetliner, and can carry a crew of seven plus a large payload. Completely loaded, the Shuttle, payload and launch tanks weight 4,500,000 lbs. A fleet of Space Shuttles has broadened our ability to develop activities in space. Now satellites can be launched directly from a Shuttle, and soon they will be used for carrying sections of the future space station into orbit to use as a launching point for deep space exploration. This Academy kit of the Space Shuttle orbiter is really easy to assemble. Everything simply snaps together. The shuttle is attached to its booster rockets which are 7 1/2 tall, and are mounted on a 4 black display base. The decal sheet lets you finish the Shuttle as the Enterprise, Atlantis, Colombia, Discovery or Endeavour. A wonderfully detailed, snap together kit that makes a beautiful display model.

This plastic model kit requires plastic cement and paint for assembly (sold separately)

Description

Dragon is famed for its collection of model space rockets, and a new 1/144 scale kit offers something scintillating for space fans. It’s the Space Shuttle Discovery attached to a Boeing 747. In actual fact, this is the very first time Dragon has offered a 1/144 scale kit of the famous Space Shuttle! From 1981 to 2011, these innovative spacecraft were a permanent fixture in the annals of space exploration and the public got used to NASA’s fleet of five manned space vehicles – Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour – regularly blasting into space. In its 30-year operational lifespan, the Space Shuttle fleet performed 135 missions. Until recently there were two NASA Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) in existence, their cabins stripped, fuselages strengthened, engines improved and vertical fins added to their tail wings. They were used to ‘shuttle’ the Shuttle fleet from landing site back to the Kennedy Space Center or to other long-range destinations.

This kit features the Space Shuttle Discovery atop a Boeing 747 SCA. The model combination is crisply detailed and accurately formed. Discovery does have some internal details for modelers to build up. The release of this model kit is topical since the final flight of Discovery occurred not so long ago on April 17, 2012 aboard a Boeing 747 SCA to its last resting place at the Smithsonian’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Virginia. The original Discovery may have retired, but model-makers can enjoy this model for a long time to come!

Dragons announcement of a 1/72 scale pre-finished replica of a Saturn V rocket in its Space Collection created a huge buzz among space aficionados! Even in miniature form, it was absolutely enormous, as the completed model stood an unbelievable 1.5m tall. Now eager model builders can get in on the action with a full kit version of the Saturn V. As the longest, heaviest and most powerful rocket ever produced, the original Saturn V stood 110.6m high and had a diameter of 10.1m. The Saturn V was at the heart of NASA’s Apollo and Skylab programs between 1967 and 1973. It was able to launch a 45-tonne payload into space beyond Low Earth Orbit. A total of 13 Saturn V launches took place, every one of them a success, plus they safely delivered 24 astronauts to the Moon.

Builders and owners of this Saturn rocket from Dragon will cause jaws to drop, while the model will without fail draw gasps of astonishment! The model includes the Command/Service Module (CSM) and Launch Escape System. All the relevant detail is carefully reproduced on the three rocket stages, and the model comes with accurate decals to provide the relevant markings. This Saturn V kit must become a centerpiece of any space fans collection, and as such it comes with a stable circular base to allow it to be freestanding on the floor. This spectacular and massive kit will send ambitious modelers into orbit!
