Description

The Virginia Class new attack submarine is an advanced stealth multi-mission nuclear-powered submarine for deep ocean anti-submarine warfare and littoral (shallow water) operations.Although the Seawolf submarine was developed to provide an eventual replacement for the US Navy Los Angeles Class submarines in combating the Soviet forces, the prohibitive unit cost and changing strategic requirements led to the US Navy defining a smaller new-generation attack submarine.
The US Navys total requirement is for 30 of the class. It placed a bulk-buy contract for the first five ships and, in January 2004, placed a multi-year contract for the following five. Virginia was laid down in September 1999, launched in August 2003 and commissioned in October 2004. It is undergoing a three-year operational evaluation before operational deployment.

Description

The Balao (SS-285) class was conceived as an improved Gato (SS-212) class submarine. Balao introduced several new concepts to the submarine force when she was commissioned in 1943. The most important of these being the thicker pressure hull, using 7/8 high tensile steel plates rather than the 5/8 plate used in the earlier Gato class. Improvements in hull construction increased the test depth of this class to 400-feet as opposed to 350-feet in the Gato class and fuel capacity was significantly increased which improved patrol radius. Submerged endurance was 48 hours at 2 knots. Cruising range was almost 10,000 sea miles on the surface at 10 knots with 116,000 gallons of diesel fuel. Patrol duration was 75 days.

Description

During World War II, the Gato class, and its successor, the Balao class, carried much of the burden of the submarine war in the Pacific. These new fleet submarines were successful boats that proved to be fast, strong, well armed, and suited to the long-range patrols necessary to fight in the Pacific. They waged war against the Axis powers, amassing a record of devastation and sheer killing power that was unmatched by any other land or sea assault platform. These new fleet submarines enabled the Navy to shift its submarine doctrine from coastal defense to open ocean attacks on enemy warships and convoys critical to enemy logistical support. This doctrine of forward presence and strike warfare by the submarine remains today.

The first of the Seawolf class, the Seawolf (SSN21), was commissioned in July 1997. The Seawolf is significantly quieter than the previous Los Angeles class, faster, has more torpedo tubes, and carries more weapons. She can target surface ships at long range and can target about 75 percent of the earths land mass for strike missions. This submarine introduces the advanced AN/BSY-2 combat system, which includes a new larger spherical sonar array, a Wide Aperture Array (WAA), and a new towed-array sonar.

Description

The Jimmy Carter, the third and final submarine of the Seawolf class, was launched in June 2004 and commissioned in February 2005. The submarine is roughly 30 m longer than the other two ships of her class due to the insertion of a section known as the Multi-Mission Platform (MMP), which is the unique feature of the Jimmy Carter. MMP provides enhanced payload capabilities, enabling the submarine to accommodate the advanced technology required to develop and test a new generation of weapons, sensors and undersea vehicles for naval special warfare, tactical surveillance operations.
