Description
The Voyager space probes — Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 — are twin unmanned spacecraft launched by NASA in 1977 to explore the outer planets of our solar system and beyond.
Originally designed for a five-year mission to study Jupiter and Saturn, they far exceeded expectations and became the first spacecraft to reach interstellar space, carrying with them the hopes, knowledge, and message of humanity.
Mission Objectives: Conduct close-up studies of Jupiter and Saturn (Voyager 1) Extend the mission to Uranus and Neptune (Voyager 2 – the only spacecraft to visit these planets) Study the outer solar system and eventually interstellar space Carry a message from Earth in the form of the Golden Record Key Features and Instruments: High-Gain Antenna: For long-distance communication with Earth Scientific Instruments: Including cameras, magnetometers, plasma detectors, and cosmic ray sensors Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators (RTGs): Provide power far from the Sun Golden Record: A 12-inch gold-plated copper disc containing sounds, images, and greetings from Earth, intended for any intelligent extraterrestrial life that may find it Major Achievements: Voyager 1: First spacecraft to provide detailed images of Jupiter and Saturn Entered interstellar space in August 2012 Currently the farthest human-made object from Earth Voyager 2: The only spacecraft to visit Uranus and Neptune Entered interstellar space in November 2018 Continues to return data on the edge of the solar system Legacy and Importance: The Voyager probes have transformed our understanding of the solar system, unveiling the complexity of the outer planets and their moons.
They revealed volcanic activity on Io, the icy rings of Saturn, and Neptune's strong winds.
Their journey into interstellar space provides humanity with its first direct data from beyond the heliosphere.
Both probes continue to send signals back to Earth from billions of miles away, expected to operate (at reduced capacity) into the late 2020s or early 2030s. A Message to the Stars The Golden Record aboard each probe contains 116 images, natural sounds, music from different cultures and eras, and greetings in 55 languages — a time capsule of Earth, intended to represent humanity to any who may find it among the stars.
Voyager: A Symbol of Exploration The Voyager mission stands as one of the greatest scientific and engineering achievements in human history — a lasting symbol of curiosity, exploration, and the desire to understand the cosmos.
