What is Flames of War?
Flames of War is a WWII miniature game from Battlefront Miniature Limited, a New Zealand company that specialises in 1:100 scale models and miniatures for WWII gaming.
The Flames of War range includes tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, artillery and anti-tank guns, infantry and support weapons. Right now, Flames of War covers Germany, the USSR, the United States of America, France, Italy, Hungary, Finland, Romania and Poland — but the nationalities are ever-expanding to ensure a realistic, accurate gaming experience.
You can command a company level force in Europe or North Africa and recreate actual battles, or fight missions against other Flames of War armies — there’s always a challenge waiting just around the corner. All you need is some mates to play with!
The hulls of the vehicles are cast in polyester resin for sharp attention to detail, whereas the more delicate components are cast in white metal to ensure the strength of your models. The vehicles are quick to put together which means you can get to gaming faster and conquer your enemies.
How do you play?
You don’t need much to start a game of Flames of War! The game is played by two or more players, so grab a friend and choose a side. From here, you will need:
- Two armies. At Frontline Hobbies, we have a huge range of armies and options to choose from. It all comes down to personal preference, or whose stats and abilities you find the most impressive.
- A rulebook. The rulebook contains all the rules you need to play Flames of War. We stock various Flames of War rulebooks including the intelligence handbook which covers organisations, characteristics, points and more.
- An artillery template. Artillery and aircraft are not designed for precision — their shells and bombs blanket a wide area, wiping out dozens of enemies at a time. The artillery template makes it easy to work out who was hit and who wasn’t.
- A battlefield. You could use your coffee table, dining table or even a custom-built gaming table. All you need is a flat surface to play on.
- Terrain. You will need a selection of terrains like hills, woods, fields, hedges, buildings and roads to fight over. You can use terrains from other tabletop wargames, you can make your own terrain or you can opt for the Battlefield in a Box from Battlefield Miniature Limited.
- Dice. You play Flames of War with ordinary six-sided dice. When the rules say to roll a die, they will give you a number that you must equal or exceed, e.g. 3+ (a roll of 3, 4, 5 or 6 means success) or 5+ (a roll of 5 or 6 means success). Any roll lower than the number specified in the rules means the attempt has failed.
- Tokens. These will help you keep track of the state of your troops — they will react to heavy fire like real soldiers and they may get pinned down or may bail out of their tanks if it gets too dangerous.
- A tape measure. You’ll need a tape measure or ruler to measure movement and shooting ranges.
From there, let the games begin! Just refer to your rulebook and the intelligence handbook to determine who moves, who shoots, who lives and who dies.
FAQs about Flames of War
Can I make my own terrain?
Absolutely! You can use terrain from other tabletop games or handcraft your own terrain from clay or foam, PVA glue, dirt, sand and tiny pebbles for texture. You can also paint your terrain for extra depth and detail.
How many platoons do I need?
How long is a piece of string? It all comes down to the scale of the game you want to play. We have a huge range of platoons available including armoured car platoons, armoured rifle platoons, amphibian tank platoons, mortar platoons and so much more. Consider how your nation would have fought in WWII and what would be most accurate — it might take a little bit of research!
