NF Mk.XIII/XVII

It was 1944. The Allied Air Force continued to rain bombs down on Germany with devastating power. In retaliation, the Luftwaffe hatched the Steinbock attack, a series of full-scale night bombing raids over London and the English mainland, that would involve over 400 bombers such as the Junkers 88, Dornier 217, and Heinkel 177. The interception of these massive aircraft, although difficult due to their high speed and low visiblility was largely entrusted to the Mosquito Night Fighter NF Mk.XIII and NF Mk.XVII variants. It was in 1941 that the RAF began development of a night after version of the all-wood Mosquito. The first was the NF Mk.II, which was equipped with an Mk.IV Airborne Intercept Radar on the nose. However, it limited range at low altitudes proved problematic versus the low-altitude, high speed attackers. For this reason, the Mosquito NF Mk.II came to be equipped with a new centimetric radar known as the A.I. Mk.VIII. The official designation of this aircraft was NF Mk.XII. The new A.I. Mk.VIII radar was also fitted to an airframe based on the Mosquito FB Mk.VI, inside a bullnose radome on the nose, resulting in the NF Mk.XIII. This Mosquito boasted reinforced wings, could carry 50 gallon drop tanks, and was powered by two of either the Merlin 21 or 23 engines. The sting of this Moasquito came from four 20mm Hispano Cannons installed just under the nose. Later, the lightweight and improved American-made CR-720 radar was mounted on the NF Mk.XVII version of the Mosquito, which would enter air combat soon after.

Description

The P-47 was the first single-seated fighter to be equipped with a supercharger paired with a 2000hp engine, allowing it to fly at the same high altitude as bombers. Armed with eight 12.7mm machineguns, the Thunderbolt, with the P-51 Mustang, constituted the main fighters of the US Army Air Force. This is the representation of P-47D early production that was nicknamed razorback because of the shape of its upper fuselage behind the cockpit. The P-47D was a high-speed, high-altitude capable fighter and escorted the allied bombers that were conducting raids over Germany. Its 1-ton payload and its robustness made the Thunderbolt the perfect aircraft for ground attacking missions.

Description

During the first half of the Second World War, the Messerschmitt Bf109 E was the main fighter of the German airforce. The E-4 housed a 1,100hp Daimler Benz DB 601Aa engine and was armed with two 7.92mm machine guns on the nose, as well as a 20mm cannon on each wing. For some aircraft, bullet-proof glass was used to reinforce the front of the canopy. In addition, a 20mm canon, which ran through a tube in the propeller was supposed to be installed but was unsuccessful. Displaying superb acceleration and diving ability, the E-type planes overpowered the RAFs Hawker hurricane and equaled the Spitfire fighters in the Battle of Britain. However, with a flight range of only 560km, the E-4 planes were limited to just fifteen minutes of combat over British skies. Thus, the bombers were not given sufficient support and sustained heavy damage. As a result, the Luftwaffes strategy to bomb England into surrender ended in failure. To deal with this drawback, the E-4 planes were equipped with additional 300L fuel tank. These improved fighters, called E-7, were first deployed at the end of 1940. After the Battle of Britain, the E-4/7 planes were sent to the front lines of Northern Africa. As the Bf109 F-type fighters production was advanced, the E-4/7 was retired from the front lines. However, some veteran pilots continued to use the E-4/7 mainly for ground support duty until the summer of 1942.

About the Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9

Following the successful entry of the Focke-Wulf Fw190 A series of fighter aircraft over the English channel during the autumn of 1941, the German RLM requested a high altitude version to complement the fighter fleet, and three projects were started. The Fw 190B used the B.M.W. 801 turbo-supercharged radial engine and a pressurized cockpit, but very few of these were built. The Fw190C was powered by a 1,750hp Daimler Benz DB603A in-line engine, of which three prototypes were built. The third high altitude project was based on the Focke Wulf Fw190A airframe and powered by a Junkers engine. The fuselage was lengthened to accommodate the V-12 cylinder, liquid cooled, 1,750hp Jumo 213 engine, and made its initial flight during the winter of 1941-42, Five further prototypes were produced, plus a small batch of Fw190 D-0s were completed from standard production Fw 190A-7 airframes. These pre-production aircraft were followed by the Fq-190D-1s which had the increased area vertical fin and rudder. There were no Fq190 D-2 through D-8 designations. The Fw-190D9 began production in June 1944, with early versions having the flat topped canopy, and from W.Nr 210001 onwards having the Galland hood (blown canopy). It went into combat with the III/JG 54 Grunherz (Green Hearts) in September 1944, at Achmer, Germany, as top cover for the new Messerschmitt Me262 jet fighters then entering service.

Defeated in World War II, Imperial Germany completely collapsed and its territory was divided into two spheres, liberalist and communists. Then in 1955, West Germany was admitted to the Western European Alliance and the West German Defense Forces was re-established as a new member of the NATO powers.

As West Germany is adjacent to the communist sphere, problems on national defense was much thought of. To defend the border-line an armoured unit was established. The German techniques by which the Tiger, Panther and other excellent tanks were produced was succeeded by this Leopard tank that appeared in 1961 in West Germany. Leopard also has the name of Standard Panther. It was prototyped in 1961 and 1962 and was formally adopted by the West German Army in 1963, prior to the adoption of the French A.M.X. 30. In 1964, the West German Army placed an order for 1,400 of this tank and the first tank, mass produced, was delivered by Krauss Moffei in Munich.

The crew of the tank is four and L7A 1 105mm gun made in Britain is used as its main gun which is common to tanks of the NATO forces and has the same destroying power as that of the British Centurion, U.S.A. M60 and Swiss Pz 61. Its shooting sight is based on a range finder system and it can shoot a target at a distance of 1,000 meters even at night by simultaneous use of infrared rays. Its engine is a water-cooled, 10 cylinder multi-fuel engine by Mercedes Benz.

The maximum high speed is 65km/h. Not only diesel oil but also gasoline and fuel for jet engines can be used. Its chassis and body is water-tight so that it can cross rivers at a depth of 4 meters underwater. Thus, this tank is a modern excellent maneuverability tank of which importance is attached.
