Description

After a drought of nearly two years, Craig Lowndes returned to the Supercars podium to claim his 106th career win in the second leg of the 2018 Tyrepower Tasmania SuperSprint.

Taking his first pole since August 2015, Lowndes proved he was back at his best, leading the field for most of the 84-lap Race 8 down at Symmons Plains.

Lowndes held off early challenger Shane van Gisbergen to pull away with a lead of nearly two seconds when he pitted at the end of lap 14. Lowndes continued to build his lead before making his first stop at the end of lap 22 when 2.6 seconds ahead of Jamie Whincup. He rejoined behind Scott McLaughlin, whose shorter fill had placed him ahead of van Gisbergen but on lap 29, Lowndes slipped down the inside of McLaughlin at Turn 4, reclaiming top spot.

McLaughlin was first to pit in the second round of stops, nearly two seconds behind Lowndes. This resulted in Lowndes being nearly five seconds ahead of Whincup when they pitted together two laps later. Lowndes had just enough time to stay ahead of Whincup as they headed back to the track, with McLaughlin slotting in between them as they started to move through the slower traffic early in the final stint.

Lowndes once again crept away, while Whincup edged closer to McLaughlin, but these positions were held as Lowndes went on to take his first win since the second race at Queensland Raceway back in July 2016.
